The BABWC develops organized power and authentic grassroots leadership among Black workers (unionized, nonunion, immigrant, formerly incarcerated, youth, and the unemployed) and the extended community. The center’s key strategies are leadership development of workers, research, organizing, and building strategic alliances between the Bay Area labor movement and the Black community. As a result of its activities, the BABWC seeks to promote economic and racial justice, peace, and prosperity for the Bay Area by eliminating poverty wage employment and developing policies and corporate practices that perpetuate equality in the labor market.

Meet the Team!

justin king
Oakland Organizer

justin has been a organizer in the black community since 2012, most recently with the bay area black worker center. he previously interned in atlanta with the racial justice action center (rjac) around issues of race, gender, and mass incarceration. he also has served as youth mentor for many years back home in virginia and in new york city, focusing on the arts as a way to fight against white supremacy. justin knows he gets his fighting spirit from his parents and older siblings who have all organized in some type of capacity. justin has worked low wage jobs and it is from this and his life experiences that justin found himself within the mission of the bay area black worker center.

Tichelle Thomas
Administrative assistant

Tichelle got involved with BABWC through another organization she is working for, she has worked as a retail customer service manager for 5 years, and completed real estate classes at Merritt College.  Now she is in administrative work and really enjoying it, especially when she gets to do it for organizations that are passionate about the same pressing issues she is passionate about!  Tichelle believes in her role here because any support that will help BABWC stay organized and efficient is important to the revolutionary path BABWC is paving.
