Black People are being pushed out of Oakland, especially West Oakland. Historically, Black people have been left out of the hotel industry. We want new hotel projects to commit to Local Hire, Ban-the-Box & livable wage jobs so it can provide real economic opportunity to the community.
In November 2017, Unite Here 2850 reached out to Bay Area Black Worker Center to be apart of a local hire campaign for a hotel development happening in west oakland. The BABWC was asked to assist in outreach concerning local hire for oakland residents as well as ban the box hiring for the hotel that will be on Mandela Parkway, in West Oakland. BABWC members met with the Oakland planning commission to voice concerns about the lack for commitment from Ram Hotels around local hire and ban the box. Because of the pressure from BABWC and our coalition, the Oakland Planning Commission tasked the developer to host two community benefits meetings. These meetings had no real value to the community, just another check off the list. Against the desires of the local community, the Planning Commission voted to allow the developer to begin building without the Community Benifits Agreement in writing.
Join us, as we continue to represent the community and demand quality, livable wage jobs exist for and in our community!
